LOS ANGELES - "The Dark Knight" continues to obliterate box office records, crossing the $300 million mark in just 10 days.

The epic Batman saga grossed $75.6 million in its second weekend in theaters, pushing its domestic total to $314,245,000, Warner Bros. head of distribution Dan Fellman said Sunday.

That surpasses the record set in 2006 by "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," which took 16 days to make $300 million.

The latest Batman installment already had broken records for best opening weekend at $158.4 million and best single-day with $66.4 million. It's also busted records in its showings on IMAX screens, making $16.3 million in its first 10 days.

Fellman expects that "Dark Knight" could reach $400 million in about 18 days, which would beat the record "Shrek 2" set in 2004 when it made that much money in 43 days.

"What can you say? We've been getting a lot of repeat business coming in," Fellman said. "Our audience is expanding, like you would expect with terrific word-of-mouth and strong reviews. Our audience is getting a little bit older, that's the good news. We're finding the younger demographic, male and female, coming back."

He called it "a big surprise," adding: "To do $300 (million) plus in 10 days, we just couldn't have predicted it."

"The Dark Knight" could pass "Titanic" as the highest-grossing film in U.S. history, said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Media By Numbers. James Cameron's 1997 extravaganza made $600,788,188 domestically, a record no other movie has come close to touching.

"The `Titanic' record has sat in a lock box for 10 years. It's a tall order but if any film has a chance to surpass that number, it's got to be `Dark Knight,'" Dergarabedian said.

Director Christopher Nolan's follow-up to his 2005 origin story "Batman Begins," which again stars Christian Bale as the tormented comic-book crime fighter, initially benefited from the mystique of the late Heath Ledger giving his masterful, last performance as the Joker, Dergarabedian said.

"Now, it's all about word-of-mouth," he said. "The first weekend, there was this huge, pent-up demand and eagerness by audiences to see this movie. Now, it's like a freight train — it seems to be unstoppable."

Part of the film's visual allure comes from the fact that 30 minutes of it were shot with IMAX cameras, including an elaborate bank-heist scene at the start.

"Chris (Nolan) has clearly hit upon something," said Greg Foster, chairman and president of IMAX Filmed Entertainment. "There are many important filmmakers who we've spoken with in the last couple of weeks about shooting with IMAX cameras."

Coming in second place was "Step Brothers," which had a strong opening of its own with $30 million. The comedy reunites Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, co-stars of "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby," as 40-year-olds who've never left home and are forced to share a bedroom when their parents get married.

Rory Bruer, head of distribution for Sony, said this was at the high end of the studio's expectations.

"We'd hoped to be in the mid-to-high $20 (millions), so to hit $30 (million) is a great start," Bruer said. "Having the chemistry of Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly together again, reuniting with (director) Adam McKay who did `Talladega Nights,' it's great. They both immerse themselves and the humor comes from their connection."

Sony also has the Will Smith superhero flick "Hancock," which made $8.2 million this past weekend to cross the $200 million mark.

The weekend's other big release was "The X-Files: I Want to Believe," which made an estimated $10.2 million. Ten years after the first "X-Files" movie and six years since the pioneering sci-fi show went off the air, this latest installment finds Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) re-teaming to solve a missing-persons case.

"The hardcore `X-Files' fans, they're happy. And frankly, that's who the movie was made for," said Chris Aronson, distribution executive for 20th Century Fox.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers LLC. Final figures will be released Monday.

SAN DIEGO - "Terminator Salvation" won't hit theaters until next summer, but thousands of fans got an early look at a portion of the film Saturday.

Director McG presented never-before-seen footage during a Comic-Con panel and offered a few hints about what to expect from the highly anticipated fourth installment in the "Terminator" franchise.

For example, Arnold Schwarzenegger could be back.

"The T-800 model indeed is part of the mythology of Terminator," McG said coyly, referring to the machine model California's governor played in the first three films.

James Cameron, who directed the first two "Terminator" films, and special-effects master Stan Winston, who died in June, also each had a hand in the film, McG said, adding that Winston made a cameo appearance.

"He wrestles one of the hydrobots," the director said.

The movie, now shooting in New Mexico, could end up with an R rating rather than the rumored PG-13, McG revealed.

"We put the picture first at all times," he said. "If it's an R-rated picture, it's an R-rated picture and that's that."

He acknowledged that the studio is responsible for some of the online rumors.

"We release, like everyone else does, misinformation campaigns," McG said. "One of the joys of going to the movies is not knowing what's going to happen."

The brief clip shown Saturday was filled with explosions, tanks, gas masks, guns and crushed skulls.

Set in 2018, the film is dark and apocalyptic, "exploring what the world is like after a nuclear holocaust," the director said. "We wanted everything to feel like giant Soviet tanks crushing all comers."

"Terminator Salvation," a Warner Bros. release, is set to hit theaters in May.

Stiller triumphs with 'Tropic Thunder'

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Oh, what a lovely war movie Ben Stiller and his platoon have concocted in "Tropic Thunder."

Stiller -- who stars, directs, co-writes, co-produces and probably acts as animal wrangler as well -- imagines a lost patrol of self-absorbed yet terminally insecure actors working on a war movie to end all war movies in Southeast Asia only to wind up in a real-life combat with narco-terrorists.

"Tropic Thunder," which opens August 13 via DreamWorks/Paramount, sends up all things Hollywood, from pampered actors and outrageous media tycoons to war movies in general. OK, these are easy targets. But Stiller and co-writers Justin Theroux and Etan Cohen hit 'em with a fair degree of accuracy and consistency.

After a summer devoted to superheroes -- indeed, Stiller's co-stars Robert Downey Jr. and Jack Black played such roles in "Iron Man" and "Kung Fu Panda" -- how gratifying it is to experience a movie taking the mickey out of super-impossible heroics.

It's by no means a perfect comedy -- nor would you want it to be. Gags and stunts are all over the place, yet the film does de-Stiller-erize the essence of contemporary movie comedy even as it has fun with outrageously crude jokes.

A savvy opening has three movie trailers and a concession ad cleverly establishing our leading actors: Stiller's Tugg Speedman is a fading action star whose last, desperate bid for Oscar glory caught him playing Simple Jack, a retarded farmhand who can talk to animals. Black's coked-up Jeff Portnoy stars in a series of gross-out films built around fart jokes. Downey's five-time Oscar winner Kirk Lazarus -- think early Robert De Niro, Laurence Olivier and Gwyneth Paltrow but don't think about it too long -- is so into the "method" and physical disguise that he has surgically darkened his skin to play a black actor. Actor-comedian Brandon T. Jackson plays rap star Alpa Chino -- say it to yourself slowly -- who promotes a "Booty Sweat" energy drink and "Bust-A-Nut" candy bar.

In the name of authenticity, the film's British director (Steve Coogan) helicopters this gang along with acting newcomer Kevin Sandusky (Jay Baruchel), a possibly shellshocked technical adviser (Nick Nolte) and an enthusiastic explosives expert (Danny McBride) deep into the jungle. The director proceeds to step on an old land mine, which leaves the troupe without direction -- but no one here has ever paid much attention to a director anyway.

This setup provides a broad comic canvas for stunts; explosions; battles between actors firing blanks and a drug gang that doesn't; wars back home between the film's financier and Tugg's agent (Matthew McConaughey); and a drug lord played by 12-year-old newcomer Brandon Soo Hoo.

The film almost gets hijacked by Downey, an Australian actor and now a black man who no longer recognizes his own identity. It's a great comic performance and reaches its satiric zenith when, as the two stroll blithely unaware through a dangerous jungle, Kirk critiques Tugg's performance as Simple Jack. Kirk points out that actors who have won Oscars playing the mentally challenged "never go full retard," a hysterically funny and uncannily accurate piece of film criticism. (Kudos to the writers as well.)

But Stiller manages his movie nicely so that all actors get their share of the comic spotlight. Seldom does an ensemble comedy not contain a single weak character or performance as does this one. Oh, by the way, Tom Cruise has a role, too. He is in such a good disguise, though, that few are going to recognize him until the final credits.

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Greta Garbo's beauty was legendary. It earned her the adoration of audiences and captivated even Adolf Hitler, who allegedly implored her to go to Germany to become the mother of his Aryan race.

But the Swedish actress owed her luminous onscreen presence to more than her flawless skin and bone structure: Her secret weapon was Max Factor Silver Stone #2 makeup, which made her literally shimmer on film.

In much the same way that Garbo preferred to stay out of the spotlight, however, the working relationship between Hollywood and the beauty industry is subtler than one might expect.

"Many times (MAC Cosmetics) is there, and we may get a credit at the end of the film, or we may be in the literature, but we're there very discreetly," says John Demsey, group president of Estee Lauder Companies, parent company of MAC. "We're not there in a very sponsorship sort of way, because the relationship is very real and functional."

Indeed, one isn't likely to hear about it, but makeup artists relied heavily on MAC products for some of this summer's studio fare, including "Sex and the City," "The Love Guru" and "Get Smart."

ANGRY INCH LIPSTICK

But such collaborations do sometimes make headlines, with products developed for specific projects making it all the way to the retail market.

"Sometimes these things actually become promotional activities or tie-ins of the brand itself," Demsey says. "When (2001's 'Hedwig and the Angry Inch') was done, we hosted the opening party in New York City and actually created an Angry Inch lipstick for Hedwig."

Similarly, celebrity eyebrow guru Anastasia Soare, creator of Anastasia Beverly Hills, invented her famed brow kit for her entertainment clients who were shooting on location.

"I had clients, and they would go on the set for a movie, let's say, in Canada for three months, and they would be panicking, like, 'Who is going to do my eyebrows?"' Soare recalls. "So I (would cut) a stencil just with the shape of their eyebrows and then (add instructions for) the makeup artist on how to do it. Then I thought, Maybe some women are out there at home, maybe in Oklahoma, and I am not there -- maybe I should make a kit and sell it and they could do this at home."

High-definition technology has also resulted in the development of specialized cosmetics, like MAC's Airbrush line, which features micronized particles.

"Micronized milling is the finest, smoothest process possible, making foundation and powder appear to look like they are one with the skin," MAC makeup artistry director Gregory Arlt explains. "With HD, you need the skin to appear flawless and makeup-free, even when makeup is applied. Micronized foundations and powders achieve that perfectly."

MAC's not alone in the HD market. Competitors include Cargo's Blu-ray Collection, which is used on the set of FX's "Dirt" and Showtime's "Weeds."

But there are instances in which the beauty and entertainment industries' impact on each other -- and the viewing public -- are far more visible.

Fashion models once ruled as spokespeople for beauty companies, but actresses -- such as Cate Blanchett (for SK-11), Courteney Cox (for Kinerase) and Kate Hudson (for David Babaii for WildAid, of which she is also a co-founder) -- have largely taken their place.

"If you have beautiful skin as a celebrity, you can really affect what people buy as far as skin care," says Dr. Garth Fisher, the original plastic surgeon featured on ABC's "Extreme Makeover."

PLASTIC SURGERY IQ

The same is true of Fisher's field. Since "Makeover," the subject of plastic surgery has been a consistent draw, spawning such shows as FX's "Nip/Tuck" and E!'s "Dr. 90210." And who can forget Fox's 2004-05 series "The Swan," with its big reveal?

"I thought we really raised the plastic surgery IQ of America," says Fisher, a nose, face and breast specialist. "I thought we did it in a very professional way, a very sensitive way," he says, noting that after the show, the number of plastic surgery and cosmetic dental procedures in the U.S. increased significantly.

According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the number of cosmetic procedures, including everything from tummy tucks to Botox injections and laser hair removal, jumped from roughly 7 million in 2002 to about 11.5 million in 2005. Interestingly, the numbers have changed very little since 2005, with 11.7 million procedures being performed in 2007.

The temptation to lift and tighten can be overwhelming for Hollywood's famous faces, especially with the advances the beauty industry has seen over the last couple of decades, from injectables to laser resurfacing.

The goal is "moderation with everything," Soare says.

But moderation is difficult to achieve in the harsh light of constant media attention.

"(Celebrities) can't even go on a vacation and be in a bikini without getting photographed," notes celebrity hairstylist Sally Hershberger, who served as lead judge on Season 1 of Bravo's "Shear Genius." "I think that would be very hard."

"The media is everywhere, from magazines to blogs," says Lea Journo, creative director of the Beverly Wilshire's Lea Journo the Salon, who helps her famous clients achieve the look they need by consulting thoroughly about their projects.

"Let's not forget that celebrities belong to a dream," Journo says, "and we are here to shape it."

NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - Former "Gilmore Girl" Alexis Bledel has found a good guy in "Friday Night Lights" star Scott Porter.

The pair star in the romantic comedy "The Good Guy," which is in production in New York.

Porter plays Tommy, a rising Wall Street star in a budding romance with a new girlfriend, Beth (Bledel). He begins mentoring a seemingly hapless new salesman (Bryan Greenberg) who befriends Beth, starting a chain of events that might ultimately lead to his downfall.

Andrew McCarthy plays Tommy's vicious boss, Aaron Yoo his crass co-worker, and Anna Chlumsky Beth's unlucky-in-love friend. The project marks the writing and directing debut of Julio DePietro, who based the story partly on his experience as a partner at a hedge fund.

Porter most recently appeared in "Speed Racer," while Bledel returns to theaters next month in "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2."

SAN DIEGO - The line snaked through the Comic-Con floor. Hundreds of camera-toting fans jockeyed for position, barely able to contain their excitement.

They weren't trying to see the latest world-saving superhero or never-before-seen footage. They were waiting to see Carmen Electra and Kim Kardashian.

The two beauties made their Comic-Con debut Saturday, signing autographs to promote their new film, "Disaster Movie." Both wore formfitting, cleavage-bearing dresses as they posed for fans' photos.

For 18-year-old John Kilgore, attending the signing was the day's top priority.

"It's Carmen Electra," he explained. "What's not to like about a woman like that?"

David Benker, 46, was embarrassed to reveal exactly how excited he was to meet the two women.

"Aw, come on," he said. "My son is here and he'll tell his mom."

Most fans sheepishly shuffled by collecting their posters, but a few were brave enough to talk to the pinup pair.

"You look even more beautiful in person," said one blushing fan. "Wow."

Another whipped out his cell phone to show Electra her own photo. "You're on my screen saver right now," he said.

Despite the frenzy of excitement, the fans were well behaved, Electra said: "They were all really sweet."

A Lionsgate release, "Disaster Movie" — which features a wrestling scene between Kardashian and Electra — hits theaters Aug. 29.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — "Terminator Salvation" won't hit theaters until next summer, but thousands of fans got an early look at a portion of the film Saturday.

Director McG presented never-before-seen footage during a Comic-Con panel and offered a few hints about what to expect from the highly anticipated fourth installment in the "Terminator" franchise.

For example, Arnold Schwarzenegger could be back.

"The T-800 model indeed is part of the mythology of Terminator," McG said coyly, referring to the machine model California's governor played in the first three films.

"He wrestles one of the hydrobots," the director said.

The movie, now shooting in New Mexico, could end up with an R rating rather than the rumored PG-13, McG revealed.

"We put the picture first at all times," he said. "If it's an R-rated picture, it's an R-rated picture and that's that."

He acknowledged that the studio is responsible for some of the online rumors.

"We release, like everyone else does, misinformation campaigns," McG said. "One of the joys of going to the movies is not knowing what's going to happen."

The brief clip shown Saturday was filled with explosions, tanks, gas masks, guns and crushed skulls.

"Terminator Salvation," a Warner Bros. release, is set to hit theaters in May.

MLB to Disappear from Terrestrial Radio?

The changes that took place in the way MLB games were broadcast on television
made many think that the same will happen to radio soon enough. Today, local
television stations only broadcast 23% of the MLB games. Also, 7 of the major
league team games are only available on cable, an exclusivity factor that seems
to work well for them. In an interview to WSJ, Edison Media Research's President
Larry Rosin declared that "it is probably inevitable that baseball radio
broadcasts will go to a 100% subscription model... It will happen because
there's too much money in it not to do it." This is an interesting perspective
for the two main digital satellite radio providers, XM Satellite Radio and
Sirius. This potential development sounds excellent for XM especially, as they
would hold the exclusive rights to all major-league baseball games. Of course,
that would be an important step forward for XM, as the MLB generates huge
interest in the US, and it would mean that another building block has been added
to the development of satellite radio.

MLB Radio and XM Radio

MLB also has its own subscription paid online radio channel, and if the same
thing happens to radio as it did to television they would definitely enjoy the
situation. Since experts in the communication field consider that satellite
radio is still in its infancy, the trend of moving broadcasts of such games to a
subscription paid environment would take digital radio broadcasting to the next
level of development. The earnings from XM Radio and MLB Radio are split between
the 30 MLB teams, but they are divided equally. This means that the MLB team’s
interests would be high and the economical and financial factors could speed up
the process of making MLB games exclusive to satellite radio. The statistics we

have signed up to receive the MLB transmission, so there is a lot of potential

Canadian satellite radio

While the United States initiated the satellite radio evolution, Canada is

now hot on their trails. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications
Commission (CRTC) began hearings in 2004 for applicants ready to develop
Canada’s first satellite radio broadcasting. The Canadian satellite radio
industry received quite a lot of interest and in the end three main applications
were filed: XM filed one in partnership with Canadian Satellite Radio and Sirius
filed an application with Standard Broadcasting and the CBC. The third
application belongs to CHUM Limited and Astral Media and to many came as a
surprise. That was mostly because CHUM Limited and Astral Media came up with a
different solution that that proposed by Sirius and XM Radio. CHUM applied for a
subscription radio service that is to be delivered through the already existing
terrestrial DAB transmitters. In other words, the transmitters would be the ones
receiving the satellite transmission, from where they would continue the
broadcast to consumer owned receivers. While the CHUM Limited and Astral Media
proposal offers an entirely Canadian approach, the first two bring in a blend of
US based technology and Canadian broadcasting channels. XM Radio and Sirius had
a slight advantage in the fact that the coverage area of their satellites
already existed in parts of Canada, so a small audience was already using their
services.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) approved
all three applications in June 2005, but with a series of conditions imposed to
the three solicitants. Here they are as required by the CRTC:

A minimum of 8 channels must be produced in Canada and for each Canadian
channel 9 foreign channels can be broadcast.

At least 85% of the content on the Canadian-produced channels (whether
musical or spoken word) must be Canadian.

At least 25% of the Canadian channels must be French-language stations.

At least 25% of the music aired on the Canadian channels must be new
Canadian music.

At least 25% of the music played on the Canadian channels must be from
up-and-coming Canadian artists.

The three companies had to accept these conditions as they are part of the
Canadian broadcasting regulations. The US companies and their Canadian partners
began negotiations for tilting the rules in their favor. One of the main offers
of both the Sirius and XM Radio partnerships was that they would play 50% French
content as opposed to the 25% required by the CRTC. AS a results of the
negotiations, XM Radio received 5 channels of National Hockey League
Play-by-Play in addition to the channels they already had – XMs part of the deal
was to cover the Canadian National Hockey League games. The fact that the US
satellite industry giants were both allowed to broadcast on Canadian territory
determined CHUM to appeal the decision. They motivated their action by saying
that the two US companies would simply “suffocate” CHUM with their presence in
Canada, not allowing any room for development for the all-Canadian company. CHUM
also complained about the deals that were cut with the two US companies. As a
response, Canadian Satellite Radio and Sirius Canada said that CHUM is in fact
trying to obtain monopoly over the Canadian satellite radio market for
themselves.

Today’s Canadian satellite radio

One of the main complaints of the people of Canada was that the CRTC decision
did not require sufficient Canadian content. This made the broadcasters come out
with promises of additional French and Canadian content. The Canadian Federal
Cabinet accepted the CRTC decision on September 10, 2005. XM satellite radio was
launched on the 29th of November 2005 and Sirius was next on December 1. Monthly
subscription rates are $12.99 for XM with a one time activation fee of $19.99
and $14.99 for Sirius, without any activation fees. Both companies are expecting
rapid increases in the numbers o subscribers, although, in spite of the extra
Canadian content they added to their air time, there are still quite a few
voices protesting against the potential monopoly the two companies may get to in
the near future.
