Alpha-lipoic acid is an essential cofactor in the production of energy and acts as a potent antioxidant, and is found naturally in foods such as spinach, broccoli, tomato, liver, heart and animal muscle tissue. It is a versatile water and fat soluble metabolic antioxidant. It is added as a powerful anti-oxidant and a “recyclerâ€‌ of antioxidant vitamins.

It is an antioxidant, which is a powerful substance that may help slow the aging process and fight disease. It is an antioxidant able to increase the levels of intracellular glutathione and eliminate free radicals, and is a naturally-occurring compound. Alpha-lipoic acid is a powerful fat and water-soluble antioxidant.

Alpha-lipoic acid is so effective as an anti-oxidant because it works on both water and fat-soluble free radicals that cause oxidation and cell damage in the body, and is a cell-protecting antioxidant that may help the body recycle other antioxidants , such as vitamins C and E , boosting their potency. It is a coenzyme that assists in the conversion of pyruvate to acetyl-coA. Alpha-lipoic acid is historically used for detoxification and recently gains popularity as food for diabetics due to its blood glucose lowering properties.
