Locking up Your Home Mail

While rural mailboxes can be inexpensive and easy to install, and as decorative and customized as you'd like, they are not locking mailboxes. Nor are the ones you so commonly see attached to the outside of a home with an easy top access. If you are looking for a locking mailbox for your home there are several other options, however.

Let's take a look.

If you'd like a mailbox that attaches to the outside of your home, perhaps next to your front door, you can find one that locks. More modern than their early non-locking predecessor mailboxes, these are generally constructed of die cast aluminum. Their mail flaps are on the front, made of solid brass, with the word MAIL emblazoned in caps.

You access your mailbox from the front with one of two identical keys provided. The front door lock is made of gold finish. You can also ask for a gold finish thumb latch that does not lock, if you wish. These modern locking mailboxes typically come in a variety of colors to match your home's decor as well as some choices in door design. You might, perhaps, prefer to have an eagle adorn your mailbox.

You may choose a column locking mailbox instead, one that is recessed into masonry, a brick driveway adornment or even a wall. These classy looking mailboxes are made from cast aluminum and can be ordered in a non-locking model as well. You can choice from four great colors – black, green, beige or white, and can adorn the front with an eagle if you so desire. The mail flap is locked and accessed from the front.

Most roadside mailboxes, many of which offer more than one mailbox per post, can be locked and accessed from both the front and rear. Very attractive, you can generally choose from brass, nickel, bronze or copper finish. The post on which your locking mailbox is mounted is your choice as well. You can choose a custom design to mimic your home and yard decor or choose from many ready to go color and finish options.

The need to lock your residential mailbox doesn't have to limit the look of your mail receptacle.
